Biography
Mr. Piérola has been with the ACWL since June 2002. Prior to joining the ACWL, Mr. Piérola worked as legal counsel for Peru’s trade remedies authority (INDECOPI) and research fellow of the World Trade Institute in Bern, Switzerland.
Mr. Piérola is a regular lecturer on trade law and dispute settlement at the Master in International Law and Economics of the University of Bern, the LL.M. Programme in International Economic and European Law of the University of Lausanne and the LL.M. Programme in European and International Law at the Europa-Institut of Saarland University.
Since 2006, Mr. Piérola has been appointed by various governments as arbitrator in their regional dispute settlement mechanisms, including the SIECA system (between Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua), the Free Trade Agreement between Central America, the Dominican Republic and the United States (DR-CAFTA), the Trade Agreement between the European Union, and Colombia and Peru, the Free Trade Agreement between Colombia and Mexico, and the Free Trade Agreement between Central America and Chile.
Mr. Piérola is Doctor in law from the University of Bern. He has a Master degree in Business Administration from the University of Geneva, and a Master degree in International Law and Economics from the Universities of Bern, Fribourg and Neuchâtel. He obtained his law degree from the Catholic University of Peru. Mr. Piérola speaks Spanish, English and French. He is a qualified lawyer in Lima, Peru.
Mr. Piérola has published a book on safeguard measures and two books on dispute settlement, as well as multiple articles on WTO law and dispute resolution.
