The United Arab Emirates has become the 33rd developing country Member of the WTO to join the Advisory Centre on WTO Law (ACWL). All developing countries that are Members of the WTO or in the process of acceding to the WTO are entitled, by virtue of their WTO Membership or process of accession, to become Members of the ACWL. The 42 least-developed countries (LDCs) that are Members of the WTO or in the process of acceding to the WTO are automatically entitled to the services of the ACWL without having to become Members of the ACWL.

On 28 January 2016, the United Arab Emirates signed its Protocol of Accession to the Agreement Establishing the ACWL. On 22 April 2016, the United Arab Emirates deposited with the ACWL its instrument of ratification of the Protocol of Accession. Under its terms, the Protocol of Accession took effect on 29 April 2016.

Following the United Arab Emirates’ accession to the ACWL, 75 countries – or just under half of the Members of the WTO – are now entitled to turn to the ACWL for advice on WTO law, support in WTO dispute settlement proceedings and legal training.
