The ACWL has selected two lawyers under the Secondment Programme for Trade Lawyers. Mrs Mary Kachale of Malawi and Mr Mokhtar Warida of Egypt will join the ACWL as staff members in September 2006 for a period of nine months, during which they will receive training in WTO law and procedures.
Mrs. Mary Kachale is the Senior Assistant Chief State Advocate in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs in Malawi. Her responsibilities include giving legal advice to government departments and ministries, such as the Ministry of Trade and Private Sector Development. She has a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree from the University of Malawi and a Diploma in International Protection of Human Rights from the Institute for Human Rights, Abo Akademi, Finland. She participated in the regional training seminar on WTO dispute settlement rules in Nairobi in 2003.
Mr. Mokhtar Warida has worked on international economic law and trade policy issues since he joined the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1998. He has a BA degree in Economics and an MA degree in Political Science and Professional Development. He is also close to completing a PhD in international trade law from Queen Mary, University of London, where he is writing a thesis on the legalisation of multilateral trade relations and WTO jurisprudence.
The first two lawyers to participate under the Programme, Ms Mpho Palime of Lesotho and Ms Olga Dios of Paraguay, completed their training at the ACWL on 16 June 2006.
The continuation of the programme in 2007-2008 will depend on the availability of funding from voluntary contributions.
