


Pascal Lamy, the Director-General of WTO, visited the ACWL on 16 May 2006. Mr. Lamy was accompanied by his legal advisor, Ms Gabrielle Marceau. Mr. Lamy met with the ACWL's Executive Director and staff, as well as the members of the ACWL's Management Board, Mr. John Weekes, Dr. Toufiq Ali, Mr. Yi-fu Lin, Ms Amina Mohamed, Dr. Stuart Robinson, and Ms Claudia Uribe.
In his informal remarks, Mr. Lamy noted that the ACWL provided a public good essential to the realisation of the purposes of the WTO. By ensuring that the legal benefits of the WTO were shared among all Members, the ACWL contributed to the effectiveness of the WTO legal system, in particular its dispute settlement procedures, and to the realisation of the WTO’s development objectives. Mr. Lamy also noted that the ACWL had gained respect for its performance. Mr. Lamy concluded his remarks by assuring the ACWL of his continuing support.
Mr. Frieder Roessler, the Executive Director of the ACWL, thanked Mr. Lamy for his interest and for taking the initiative to visit the ACWL. Mr. Roessler updated the Director-General on the achievements of the ACWL and the challenges it was facing. The members of the Management Board also expressed their appreciation for Mr. Lamy's confidence in the ACWL. Mr. Lamy took questions from the Management Board and staff, and the discussion continued at an informal lunch reception following the meeting.
