
Mr. Piérola has been with the ACWL since June 2002. Prior to joining the ACWL, Mr. Piérola served as a Legal Adviser to the Anti-Dumping and Subsidies Commission, which is Peru's investigating authority for anti-dumping, subsidies and safeguards, and as a Research Fellow at the World Trade Institute in Bern, Switzerland. He also participated in the traineeship programmes of the Appellate Body of the WTO and of the Andean Community Secretariat.
Mr. Piérola is the author of a Spanish language text on WTO dispute settlement, for which he received the Inter-American Bar Association Best Book Award 2003. The book is currently in its 2nd edition with the title Solución de Diferencias ante la OMC: Presente y Perspectivas (Cameron May, 2007). Mr. Piérola was appointed by the governments of Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua as Arbitrator of the Central American Dispute Resolution Mechanism in the context of the Central American Economic Integration System (SIECA) for a period of three years that ended on 29 September 2009.
He is a member of the Editorial Board and columnist on WTO law of the Global Trade and Customs Journal. He has given lectures and presentations on WTO-related matters at the World Trade Institute in Bern, the Graduate Institute for International Studies in Geneva, WTO, UNCTAD, the Inter-American Development Bank, South-Centre and ICTSD.
Mr. Piérola holds a lawyer's degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. He has a masters degree in International Law and Economics (MILE) from the World Trade Institute of the Universities of Bern, Fribourg and Neuchâtel, Switzerland. He is completing a PhD in Law at the University of Bern.
Mr. Piérola speaks Spanish, English and French. He is a Member of the Bar of Lima, Peru and of the Inter-American Bar Association, Washington, DC.
